August Newsletter from your astrologer – Dadhichi Toth

Welcome again,

For many, the current transits of Mars and Saturn in the heavens have resulted in a lot of hard work yet with a sense of diminishing returns. More people are working harder, longer hours and with less quality   time for their emotional and spiritual needs and growth. Quite a few people have expressed this to me lately. But!!  A tea bag always tastes better in hot water and so too we hope, do humans perform better when placed in tough, tight situations.

Ideally we seek to express our best survival instincts in a way which results in the greatest good for the greatest number. The traditional astrological meaning of Mars in aspect to Saturn is – tests of strength, disputes, separations, injury or violence or inhibited energy etc. These are the simple interpretations of astrology. In broader and deeper terms, these two planets of opposite nature reflect the harder karmic lessons of life for our planet and its citizens during this current cycle. So, not just individuals but groups and even whole communities will begin to feel this power of oppression and frustration. This is not a reference to the oppression of say, third world poverty, ( though that is an oppressive situation for millions too ). In our modern culture its an oppression by technology and lifestyle values. In the short term and on a more personal level, this reflects hard work with less returns. It also indicates a dependency on the  techno beast we have created.

Have computers given us more free time? Many people complain to me that in fact an increasing dependency on computers and technology actually results in less free time. Yet even on a corporate and global level we see how business also displays its inability to master technology. This is apparent in mammoth, multinational companies and government departments whose snail like movements towards reform, and more fundamentally, internal infrastructure change, make a a  common garden snail of a Lamborghini!

Survival in a technology driven world is hard especially over the past few years with the economic downturn which I might add I feel is going to become a permanent feature of our world. Change, transition and job insecurity are additional threads of modern western life. And so, the planets continue to remind us, as did Buddha, that change is the only constant thing. Security is simply an ephemeral concept.

Speaking of technology, Frank Zappa once wrote of television -  “I am the tool of the government and industry too, for I am destined to rule and regulate you”. By this he meant that our desires are well governed and synchronised by media/culture ( which is increasingly convergent ) and whose main focus is to perpetuate the commercial-material ideology that more is better. In fact, this framework of thinking has now already been redefined to  bigger-better-faster as the el primo life choice. Yes, speed is of the essence these days. There’s never enough time. It always seems to be running out. Right Give me more TIME!!!! God damn it!! But, speed, as Einstein proved in his incredible theory of relativity, is related to time. And as we crank up the pace of our lives, time is impacted upon.

Our frames of reference are changing and our ability to adapt to the light speed pace is also demanding increasing refinements and adjustments of perception. This is the job of Pluto and Saturn. Mars will whip them into their tasks and then leave them to their duty as he moves on, being a faster moving planet. Those with sharply developed perception and intuitive faculties will be the survivors in this brave new world. They will develop the psychic equipment with which to surmount their future obstacles, whatever that future may be. In a metaphorical sense, they can also enjoy life, their cup of tea and its myriad of flavours. In the truest sense however, they can conquer time!!

The conjunction of Mars and Saturn intensifies this month and most of us will be tested especially those born under the Cardinal signs of Libra, Aries, Capricorn and Cancer. They will feel increased pressures. With the current passing full Moon I am pleased to say that the emotional reaction to these frustrating planetary combinations should for the most part, hopefully be over rather quickly but for the remainder of us who are still not yet completely over this transit put your astral raincoat on as the demanding celestial rains of karma continue to challenge us over the next few weeks.
